Spelling Bee Rule Competition Changes for 2011-2012

This year in order to streamline and shorten the competition at the elementary schools we will be conducting only two bees at each elementary school.

The first bee starting at 6:00 will combine the 3rd and 4th graders into one bee. We will start with second or third grade words and stay with them until there are fewer than 10 competitors and then move to the fourth grade words. We will crown three winners of the grade 3-4 competition.

These winners will then immediately move to the next round and compete with the 5th graders at approximately 7:00. The three winners of the 5th grade bee (which includes the three winners of the combined grades 3-4 bee) will qualiy for the finals in March 2012.

It is still possible for a student from grades 3 or 4 to qualify for the finals if they are one of the last three competitors in the 5th grade bee. Last year 5 competitors from grade 4 qualified for the finals along with 9 middle schoolers and 10 fifth graders and a 5th grader won and went to the National Spelling Bee.

The reason for this change is that some of the elementary bees went passed 8:30 and we felt that was just too late. We also felt it was not right for the 3rd grade winners to have to wait up to two hours before competing in the playoff. We now expect the elementary bees to end by 7:30.

The middle school bee will continue to have three separate grade bees with three students from each grade qualifying for the finals.
